If there was such a thing as a Brisbane hospitality history book, winter 2023 would probably be described as the season of GPO. The opening of Artesian Hospitality Group’s landmark Fortitude Valley mega venue has dominated headlines throughout July, with the double-header debut of dapper dining spot TAMA and glam cocktail bar The Gatsby capturing the attention of the city’s sip and snack set. The launch of these two concepts alone has cemented the rejuvenated GPO as, perhaps, the year’s most high-profile opening – but there is still more on the docket to look forward to. Shrouded in mystery is the building’s third and final addition The Tax Office, a street-level destination for dining, drinks and dancing that looks to complete the GPO’s triple-helix offering. Last week The Tax Office lifted the cloche on one half of its two-part space – a chic, high-ceilinged corner bar that is infused with the same elegant touches as its sibling concepts. The room is dominated by a bespoke stone-topped infinity bar at its centre, (ringed by cushioned by leather stools) tasseled chandeliers, splashes of burgundy and herringbone timber floors combining to create a classic (yet approachable) sense of gilded grandeur.

Also opening in stage one is The Tax Office’s own kitchen, which is dispensing a menu of timeless classics tweaked by ex-Rockpool Group and Artesian executive chef Richard Harris. It includes shares like panko-crumbed beef ribs with cauliflower puree, whole grilled prawns with miso butter and sriracha salmon tartare with crispy wontons, as well as mains including buttermilk chicken burgers, sesame-crusted barramundi, black Angus sirloins and Provencal-style duck ragu. The Tax Office’s drinks list covers all essential bases, with tap beers and seltzers, and a sturdy list of Australian and international wines, giving guests plenty to quaff. While the GPO is far removed from its nightclub days, the Artesian crew isn’t completely forsaking the party lifestyle. Still under wraps is The Tax Office’s late-night portion next door, which will be equipped with additional bars, VIP bottle-service booths, a mezzanine level (complete with its own private suites), a DJ booth, a dance floor and 2-m-wide gold disco balls suspended from the ceiling. It’s set to be officially unveiled on Friday August 11 with a big ol’ grand-opening bash, featuring a set from ARIA Award-winning DJ Sgt Slick. Eager to visit? From now until Monday July 31, the Artesian team is giving punters a chance to pop into The Tax Office or a round on them, with $25 vouchers available to spend on a drink or a bite to eat.
