Located in the spot formerly occupied by The Secret Garden Cafe, The Smug Fig is a fresh and welcoming cafe serving great coffee and breakfast to East Brisbane locals.

Nestled amongst the greenery of Cottage Garden Nursery, The Smug Fig is a bright and spacious cafe owned and operated by brothers Troy and Arron van Stryp and friend Nick Ricardo. All three gents have worked in various roles across the hospitality industry and came together to pool their knowledge and open a cafe that focuses on good atmosphere, coffee and food without pretension. After obtaining the lease on the Stanley Street East location, the trio set about revamping the airy space with a new deck, comfortable furniture and wall art by Yannick Blattner, setting up tables and chairs amongst the nursery greens and throughout the venue.

A shipping container now fronts the premises, offering takeaway Two Seasons coffee and drinks to commuters from 6:00 am. From 7:00 am the kitchen begins breakfast service, which caters to the discerning breakfast lovers without losing any accessibility. Favourites and staples are prepared with interesting twists, as evidenced in meals such as banana bread served with caramelised pears and mascarpone, brie and double smoked ham omelette, bircher muesli with fig, the Fig Brekkie with balsamic tomato and house made potato hash and the Smug Benny, which boasts seeded mustard hollandaise and asparagus. The coming weeks will see The Smug Fig introduce a lunch menu, with savoury items such as club sandwiches and burgers possibly on the offer.
