Expand your bier awareness at Bavarian Bier Cafe

Before the invention of thermometers, beer brewers would dip a thumb or finger into their hop concoctions to determine the right temperature for adding yeast. Too hot and the yeast would die, too cold and the yeast wouldn’t grow. This was the brewer’s version of the age-old saying, ‘rule of thumb’.

For the month of May, the folk over at Bavarian Bier Cafe at Eagle Street Pier have put on the teaching hats, ready to educate about the difference between a Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Hell, Stiegl Goldbräu and a Spaten München bier. Expanding your bier awareness, with tasting flights on Mondays and ‘bier school’ on Thursdays, each night of the week during May’s Pure Bier Fest features a new way to celebrate the best bits of Bavaria.

Pair your educated stein with a plate of Hofbräu Dunkel Braised Beef Cheeks with root vegetables and sweet potato and ginger mash or try the Chicken Tarragon Sausage served with spätzle, caramelised spring onion and salsa verde. But make sure to leave room for a freshly baked pretzel, to soak up all that golden liquor in the saltiest way possible.
