All good things come to an end – La Boite’s newest production The Last Five Years explores love lost

We all love a good romance story. There’s usually an adorable meet-cute, followed by the joys of falling in love and eventually, making commitments and long-term plans together. However, when life gets in the way and people fall out of love, the story gets a bit more complicated. That’s exactly the premise that is being explored in La Boite Theatre’s newest production, The Last Five Years, which will be taking the stage this May. A heartstring-grabbing tale that is sure to hit home, it delves into a five-year relationship from two different perspectives.

Sometimes relationships don’t work out and at the end, you’re left trying to pinpoint the moment that it all started going downhill. La Boite Theatre’s take on the musical theatre classic The Last Five Years bravely tackles this exact scenario. Created by famed American musical theatre composer Jason Robert Brown and directed by Australian theatre alum Darren Yap, The Last Five Years depicts a love story that has run its course but using two different viewpoints to reminisce on the highs and lows of the relationship.

The emotionally powerful show follows young New Yorkers Jamie and Cathy, a couple who used to be deeply in love, but now find themselves at the the end of their marriage and trying to figure out where it all went wrong. In a fresh take on the “he said/she said” structure, Jamie tells his story in chronological order while Cathy shares hers in reverse. Their stories intersect only once during the show, at their wedding, making for a compelling and entrancing viewing experience. Trust us when we say that you might need to bring along the tissues for this one (okay, you definitely do).

The Last Five Years will play at La Boite from May 30 to June 18. Grab your tickets to this scintillating show at the La Boite website if you’re keen to discover why it’s been a staple of modern musical theatre since it premiered in 2001.
