Breaking boundaries and igniting imagination – Metro Arts unveils its bold, brave and beautiful 2023 program
When it comes to spellbinding theatre, inspired storytelling and top-tier contemporary performance, Metro Arts is certainly where it’s at. From cabaret and interactive dance to circus and spoken word, the famed creative institution is kicking off 2023 with an explosive program, delivering a spectacular selection of one-of-a-kind events for Brisbane art enthusiasts. Here’s a sneak peek into what’s on offer from January to June …
After a hugely successful 2022, Metro Arts’ 2023 program is taking art to braver and bolder places, with a jam-packed roster of events highlighting multidisciplinary artists, new perspectives and courageous choices that are sure to ignite imagination and spark dialogue. The colourful art precinct’s program kicks off in March with a fierce fusion of street dance and spoken word in Betwixt. Shining a light on the constantly evolving art form of street dance, Betwixt explores rich cultural perspectives, taking a deep-dive into everything from relationships and upbringing to identity and sense of self. The Pink Matter performance will be followed by an immersive one-off event from Bring a Plate Dance Company, who will be serving up a dance experience like no other at The People’s Dance Party. Featuring a range of different dance styles, get ready to boogie like no one’s watching.
April will see electronic trash-trio The Architects of Sound create an energetic earworm extravaganza in Rough, Red & Raw – a live, loose and largely LGBTQIA+ comedic experience. Then in May, turn your focus inward to the thought-provoking performance SHE, presented by Indeliabilityarts and led by Amy Ingram. Shining the spotlight on women and mental health, SHE shares the good, bad and ugly, from modern culture. Maintaining a raw and reflective theme, Break by The Farm and Cecilia Martin will explore what happens when dreams stretch to breaking point from the autobiographical perspective of an acrobat and circa performer.
Alongside the primary program, Metro Arts will present a number of free art exhibitions throughout the year, offering everything from an exhibition exploring queer perceptions of regional Queensland and sculptural works to the presentation of paper cutting as a medium to transcend into the realm of contemporary art. The Gallery program features a new exhibition every month, with free opening events that are open to everyone to attend.
