Who run the world? WOW at Festival 2018 celebrates females in all of their forms

Although there is still a long way to go in the fight for equality, it’s always nice to look around and take stock of the progress that has been made. Between same-sex marriage laws getting passed and the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements taking off, there is a global conversation happening around the subject of gender – particularly in regards to breaking down conventions and entering a brave new world where women speak up, stand out and have equal footing. Coming to the Brisbane Powerhouse on April 6–8, Women of the World at Festival 2018 (or WOW if you’re feeling cheeky) is a three-day celebration of everything it means to be a woman in this modern world. more

Sass is served – Hot Brown Honey brings its genre-defying live show to Brisbane

When it comes to equal representation, Australia still has a pretty bloody long way to go. Considering our First Nations people have been here for a whole lot longer than white folk, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of people of colour in popular media. From movies to breakfast panels and even stage shows, things are looking pretty … well, white. Stuff that! There’s a new crew in town set to shake up the game and shatter some cultural paradigms in the form of song, dance and straight-up activism. Coming to Brisbane Powerhouse from April 4–7, Hot Brown Honey will have you fist pumping, booty shakin’ and leaving feeling all kinds of empowered. more

Save the date: five events we’re looking forward to in 2018

Adam Devine’s Weird Life Tour – Monday January 29 at The Tivoli When it was announced that U.S comedian Adam Devine would be coming to our shores in 2018, we practically wet our pants with excitement. Okay, so that may be a slight exaggeration, but we were genuinely really excited to hear that the stand-up comic and Workaholics genius would be bringing his mug to our shores for the first time. Adam is doing a one-off show of his Weird Life Tour, which critics have hailed as an absolute riot – trust us when we say you won’t want to miss this one. People power – Circa takes it to the physical limit with Humans

For us laypeople, it’s not uncommon to see circus performers doing their thing and immediately think it’s some kind of witchcraft. Just how the heck do these people move the way that they do? While it may not be entirely natural to most, it is indeed possible. Us human beings are capable of all sorts of amazing feats when set with a challenge of seeing how far we can go, and one ensemble that proves this is Circa. Tumbling into QPAC from December 6–9, Circa’s Humans is a heart-stopping display of pure physical prowess that shows us just how far our species can push our bodies. more

Roll up, roll up – Brisbane Festival’s jam-packed residency begins this weekend

Hot damn, this town really loves spring. Far from gently awakening from a winter slumber and delicately dipping a toe into the pool to see if it’s warm enough, Brisbane prefers the cannonball method when it comes to new season celebrations. One such event that personifies this ethos is the annual Brisbane Festival, a crazy and colourful carnival running from September 9–30 that brings together all manner of artistic matter. From sex clowns to hoedowns, you’ll find it at Brisbane Festival. more

On the line – Restrung explores the explosive places in between genres

While genres can come in handy for classification, they can also be kind of limiting. We all know that one person who only listens to this or that, throwing some things aside and embracing others all because of a label (we see you, people who profess to hate country more than anything). Life is way more fun when you take the time to dig a little deeper and uncover what’s not so obvious – Restrung is taking over the Brisbane Powerhouse from August 17–19 to bring us a smorgasbord of strings-driven music, dance, theatre and art that pushes the boundaries of music and art. Let’s take a closer look at the spaces in between … more

Sashay this way – the Queensland Cabaret Festival returns with a star-studded schedule

Cabaret is one of those things that you can’t really pin down into any specific description. Most of us are familiar with the vague, abstract concept – smoky rooms, dimly lit tables, clicking fingers and simmering sensuality. Turns out there is so much more to the genre than we give it credit for – and there is a dedicated event set to show us what it’s all about. The Queensland Cabaret Festival is returning from June 1–15, sashaying into three key venues to bring us a load of sauce, sizzle and spark with a serious side of heart. more

Behind Closed Doors gives us a peek at private lives

Whether it’s overt or more of a guilty pleasure, most of us can admit to having a voyeuristic streak. Landscape with Monsters thinks outside (and gets inside) the box

When it comes to word association, there are certain notions that seem intrinsically linked to the idea of ‘circus’. Clowns? Sure. Trapeze? You bet. Red noses? Obviously. Well the circus is indeed coming to town, but definitely not as you know it – Landscape with Monsters is a groundbreaking production taking over the Brisbane Powerhouse from February 22–25, ditching the gimmicks to showcase the magic of human movement. more
