BAD Art + Fashion

Finders Keepers markets, ceramic making and tune-filled soirees – our top picks for Brisbane Art Design

If your calendar for the month of May is looking pretty dry, then listen here. Museum of Brisbane’s city-wide celebration, Brisbane Art Design (BAD), is back! This year, BAD is jam-packed with must-attend workshops, open studios, design talks and art parties. We’ve been trawling through the program and have hand-picked our five favourite happenings, so you can join in on the fun …

BAD Art+Fashion Runway
Brisbane’s creative scene is absolutely thriving at the moment and this renaissance of artistry and innovation will be spotlighted at the BAD Art+Fashion Runway on Saturday May 27. Held in South Brisbane, this special runway event is presented in partnership with ARIA and produced by Fashion Queensland’s Laura Churchill. The event will see Brisbane’s leading designers fuse art and fashion in a parade that will have you eager for a front-row seat to witness the wearable artworks defining the cultural fabric of Brisbane. Designers will be announced soon, so keep your eyes peeled. Register for a free ticket via the BAD website.

BAD Finders KeepersThe Finders Keepers x BAD Art & Design Pop-up Market
Clear your calendar for Saturday May 20, as that’s when the The Finders Keepers x BAD Pop-up Market is set to be slinging goodies left, right and centre. If you haven’t been to a Finders Keepers market before, then trust us when we say you’ll need to bring a few empty tote bags. This one-day-only free art and design mini-market will be showcasing more than 20 talented local makers at The Black Brisbane in Albion. From 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, you can grab a coffee (and a cheeky snack) and stroll the stalls for unique, handmade wares. Entry is free!

Southside x Mas and MiekSouthside x Mas & Miek Dinner
One BAD event that should not be missed is the one-night-only collaboration between Brisbane’s beloved Mas & Miek Ceramic Studio and the culinary talents at Southside Restaurant on Thursday May 25. In the surrounds of the Fish Lane Arts Precinct, you will be introduced to the art of hand building ceramics by mother-daughter duo, Mieke and Charlie from Mas & Miek. Then, your taste buds will be treated to a delicious two-course banquet menu – plated on Mas & Miek handmade pieces – with paired wines from Southside Restaurant. You can dig in to hiramasa kingfish, wakame potato and truffle spring rolls, spicy wok-fried pork belly and much more. As a special gift, guests will receive a handmade, glazed and fired plate used during their dining experience to take home with them. Tickets are $169 per person and can be purchased here.

BAD Bus ToursBAD Open Studio Bus Tour
Ready to roll in search of art? If the answer is yes, then hop onboard the BAD Open Studio Bus Tour, which is hitting the road on weekends during May. The BAD Open Studio Bus Tours offer a guided behind-the-scenes look into Brisbane’s art and design community – allowing guests to step into the artist’s studio and hear directly from the makers about their practice. There’s three routes to choose from – westside, northside and southside, so pick your hood wisely! Tickets are $40 and can be secured here. If exploring makes you hungry, then we suggest booking into the special BAD Open Studio Bus Tour plus lunch experience.

BAD Closing PartyBAD Closing Party
They say all good things must come to an end, so it’s only fitting that BAD closes out its fun-filled festivities with a huge block party on Sunday May 28. Hosted at Plant Empire in Yeerongpilly, this send-off soiree will be packed full of flavourful fare, live tunes, eye-catching art and great company. Guests can explore the open studios, mingle with artists, grab a snack from the food trucks and get grooving to the sweet sounds of local band Cigany Weaver. The best part? Entry is free. This is your invitation to send it.
