Further plans announced for Howard Smith Wharves development
After a lengthy planning and consultation process, a development application has finally been submitted for the redevelopment of the historic Howard Smith Wharves.
In late 2014 Brisbane City Council announced HSW Nominees, led by Adam Flaskas and Elisha Bickle, as the preferred candidate to develop the Howard Smith Wharves site. Given six month to submit a development application, HSW Nominees has announced its proposed designs for the 3.45-hectare site, repurposing it into a mixed-use riverside precinct including laneway and outdoor dining, an events lawn, multiple refurbished heritage buildings and an observation deck offering sparkling views of the Brisbane River.
Perhaps the star of the plan is the boutique Art Series Hotel, which will be located under the Story Bridge. The design will follow the contours of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and adopt a multi-faceted, sandy-coloured design to seamlessly blend in with the natural backdrop. The 164-suite hotel will boast a garden oasis, pool and sun lounges on level three, where guests can soak up the sun and marvel at arguably the best view Brisbane has to offer. Other drawcards of the Howard Smith Wharves development include a craft brewery and beer garden housed in a refurbished wharf shed, an exhibition building and waterfront amphitheatre, and underground parking for up to 350 vehicles. Construction is expected to kick off in late 2015.
