Sunnybank Hills welcomes The Cornr – a chic cafe serving elevated brunch and specialty coffee

Although we’re partial to an experimental epicurean adventure, we are also of the opinion that brunch shouldn’t be too complicated. The Cornr, Sunnybank Hills’ new fine-casual cafe, is nailing the necessities. We’re talking flavour, presentation and portion size – all packaged into a well-accoutred space inspired by contemporary design trends.

Sunnybank is undoubtedly one of Brisbane’s biggest and broadest culinary melting pots, but ask Gregory Foo what the suburb is missing and he’ll tell you that the area has been in need of more contemporary brunch and coffee spots for a while now. In a savvy display of taking initiative, Gregory, alongside friends and business partners Henry Chin and Kenny Nguyen, have opted to fill the gap in the local market themselves. The trio’s goal – to open an ultramodern eatery that blends au courant aesthetics with a menu of sense-enlivening eats – has been deftly realised with The Cornr, a slick nosh spot that opened just over a week ago on Gowan Road in Sunnybank Hills. An empty corner space located on the same block as popular local eateries Ramen DanboYat Tiu Rice Noodle Rolls and Impressive Dumplings has been given a chic makeover consisting of matte grey concrete and black furnishings – a clean and contemporary palette that looks to funnel attention towards what is on the plate and in the cup. A coffee window facing the parking lot services the grab-and-go coffee-guzzling crowd, while the sharp interior space seats close to 30 across a curved banquette and scattering of sturdy tables.

When it comes to The Cornr’s offering, Gregory, Henry and Kenny aren’t looking to reinvent the wheel, but rather elevate Australian brunch classics through exceptional ingredients, cooking techniques and presentation. The debut menu boasts a host of standout signatures, from the duck croissant (grilled slow-cooked duck served on a flaky croissant with rocket, fetta cheese and caramelised onion), grilled lobster roll, a creamy classic carbonara served with a butterflied Ocean King prawn, and a wagyu beef burger served with house made burger sauce and fries. The Cornr’s espresso bar (equipped with a gleaming Victoria Arduino machine and two grinders) churns out caffeinated cups using beans from Voyage Coffee Co., available alongside fresh juices and cabinet pastries. The Cornr team have more in store – the crew has applied for a liquor licence and are planning on opening the venue at nights for dinner bookings.

The Cornr is now open to the public. Operating hours and other details can be found in the Stumble Guide.
