Unlock universal mysteries at Hadron Collider: step inside the world’s greatest experiment

Science is golden, folks, and anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong. How the heck else are we supposed to figure out the secrets of the universe? The Large Hadron Collider – a particle accelerator that’s buried deep beneath the border of Switzerland and France – has been responsible for some pretty amazing discoveries in the science world, and until now us Aussies couldn’t get a proper look at the mammoth structure. Hadron Collider: step inside the world’s greatest experiment is an award-winning exhibition coming to the Queensland Museum from December 9, 2016 to April 25, 2017 inviting us to step inside a world of history-making madness.

Hadron Collider: step inside the world’s greatest experiment is an immersive exhibition that has previously made waves at the Science Museum in London, based around a recreation of the Large Hadron Collider itself. Seeing as the actual structure is buried and busy, the exhibit blends theatre, video and sound art with real artefacts from CERN to recreate a visit to the famous particle physics laboratory. Patrons go behind the scenes to witness the uncovering of the Higgs boson, explore the 27-kilometre collider, and discover how studying the subatomic world can point the way to a fuller understanding of our universe.

As well as the general awesomeness surrounding the exhibition itself, there are some extra-special events happening in conjunction with it – three exclusive dates over summer have been reserved for up-late sessions that will feature expert talks, live demonstrations, groovy tunes and access to the entire Queensland Museum. Get a small-scale taste of the Collider’s power with particle physics experiments from UQ Science, or throwback to primary school at a paper plane engineering origami workshop. Amongst all the clever peeps around giving talks, Keeper of Science Collections at the Science Museum and the curator of London’s Hadron Collider exhibition Alison Boyle will be chatting all things nerdy – you won’t want to miss this.

Thirsting for some of that sweet, sweet knowledge? You can grab tickets to the Hadron Collider exhibit and Hadron Collider After Dark events here.
