Embrace collaboration and diversity with La Boite’s 2017 season
Theatre is all about evoking emotion, but it can all seem a little hollow at times. La Boite Theatre Company has always had a reputation for fostering the next generation of true theatrical talent, and the 2017 season is packed with solid gold that proves this ethos. Presenting a well-rounded offering that makes the most of Brisbane and Australia’s diverse and colourful theatrical landscape, the focus is highly personal – La Boite are honing in on your stories, your community and your theatre.
La Boite’s 2017 season has really stepped up in regards to delivering an impressive mixture of styles and genres. The first cab off the rank in 2017’s killer line-up is Single Asian Female, the fresh new comedy from Brisbane’s very own Michelle Law that challenges race and gender stereotypes. Coming for a limited time in May is The Village, an intense cultural exploration that utilises verbatim stories from refugees and asylum seekers to get its powerful message across. The legendary collaborative duo of Naomi Price and Adam Brunes (of Rumour Has It and Wrecking Ball acclaim) have reunited for Lady Beatle, a highly anticipated chart-topper cabaret that focuses on the female muses behind the Fab Four’s greatest hits.
The latter part of the year continues to heat up with a great selection of social commentary and musical treats. Tim Sharp’s Laser Beak Man will be brought to life with a little help from Dead Puppet Society and Ball Park Music’s Sam Cromack, and the violent tendencies of Australian culture get examined in Nick Enright’s modern classic Blackrock. One the Bear is a hip-hop fairytale collab from the brilliant minds of the Black Honey Company and the Campbelltown Community Arts Centre, and the whole thing is presented entirely in rhyme (Shakespeare feels ahoy).
