Pavement Whispers: Vol 12 February 24

From whispers of rooftop venues to shipping-container vendors, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Eleven
Brisbane is about to gain a new rooftop venue thanks to restaurateur Jason Coats, owner of The Jetty South Bank and The Jetty on Oxford in Bulimba. Eleven will sit 11 floors up atop 757 Ann Street, offering sweeping views of the city. The all-day venue will have several spaces wrapping around three sides of the building, with green walls, natural teak finishes, retractable roofing and an impressive five-tonne feature tree. Inspired by Jason’s lucky number (and of course its 11th-storey location), Eleven will serve up European-style share plates, light breakfasts, coffee, cocktails and more. Look out on The Weekend Edition for more information closer to its expected opening in May.

Raw Energy
Following success in locations across the state, Raw Energy will soon be bringing its fresh juices, smoothies and nourishing dishes to Edward Street in Brisbane City. Boasting plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options, the all-day breakfast and lunch menu promises nutrient-rich dishes ranging from roasted vegetable omelettes to Mexican roll-up wraps. The space is secured, the banners are up and the fit-out will commence in a few weeks.

The Gunshop Cafe
West End breakfast institution The Gunshop Cafe is upping its game and revamping its approach to dining with a few new exciting additions. First, owner Jason Coolen has announced that a new wood-fired oven will be installed in the courtyard, cooking up delicious pizzas and succulent roasts. Second, a new shipping-container premises, Gunshop Cafe Reloaded will open next door, serving takeaway coffee and on-the-go snacks. Expect these additions to open in March.

Sugo mi
Oxford Street pizzeria and gelateria Sugo mi has undergone extensive renovations recently. The popular Bulimba spot has received a facelift in both dining areas, including an extension to the bar area and a bolstered selection of beers on tap. Admire the new fit-out including light fixtures from Salvage Design, blackboard murals and Aztec wall tiling over dinner Monday to Sunday or lunch on weekends.

Guzman y Gomez
If you’ve been craving Mexican this week, hold out until this Thursday February 26 and you could cash in on Free Burrito Day at the opening of Guzman y Gomez’s 55th Australian store. Sitting inside Toowong Village Shopping Centre on Sherwood Road, the Mexican fast-food joint will be launching with free burritos and burrito bowls, as well as a traditional mariachi band, face painting and free samples of corn chips with guacamole. Get in between 11:00 am and 8:00 pm.

Needlefruit Sewing Lounge
Paddington is preparing to welcome a new craft hub when Needlefruit Sewing Lounge opens on Latrobe Terrace next month. Offering sewing machine rental, sewing classes for all levels from beginner to intermediate, fabrics for sale and patterns from the US, UK and Canada, Needlefruit is looking to be a great resource for avid fabric fanatics living in Brisbane’s west. The space will be hosting a launch party on Saturday March 7, with classes beginning on Thursday March 12.
