Pop’s Milk Bar brings a touch of nostalgia to Southport with jaffles, burgers and shakes

Is it just us, or were things generally cooler in the 1950s and 60s? The cars, the clothes, the music. Oh boy, the music! If you possess a soft spot for the eras defined by rock ‘n’ roll, milk bars, cultural revolutions and James Dean, consider this your official invitation to step back in time at Southport’s newest nostalgic noshery – Pop’s Milk Bar. Opening this week, the venue is the latest from Jacinto Group, which has previously brought us Burleigh burger institution Two Yolks and Finn Poke.

The toe-tapping tune of Chuck Berry’s ‘Johnny B. Goode’ rings across the carpark, attracting the keen ears of passers-by who begin to congregate at the entrance of Pop’s Milk Bar before the doors have even opened for trade. Inspired by retro diners and milk bars of days past, this new addition to Southport Park Shopping Centre is already sparking joy and curiosity among the locals.

“We have the 50s, 60s rock ‘n’ roll [playing] outside, and you see them in their push walkers,” says owner Jem Jacinto, enthusiastically recalling the delighted reactions of patrons. “When they hear the music, they have a hop in their step and a big smile on their face.”

The smiles alone are confirmation that Jem’s latest concept has hit the mark. Before deciding on the theme, Jem sat and watched the steady stream of people walking in and out of the centre, for six hours. Among his observations, was that the demographic ranged from young families right through to elderly patrons doing their grocery shopping – so he knew that neither of his existing concepts, Two Yolks or Finn Poke, suited the spot. Pop’s, Jem tells us, is for everyone, regardless of age.

With striking wood panelling, a stand-up pinball machine and a classic diner aesthetic, Pop’s Milk Bar aims to recreate that nostalgic corner-store vibe.

When it comes to the menu, Jem tells us it’s a delightful throwback to simpler times, with a focus on handmade and home-made dishes. “We make fresh gelato every day,” Jem says, ushering towards the cabinet that is brimming with choices ranging from classic to delightfully decadent. As for the food, Jem has curated a people-pleasing selection, ranging from cheap and cheerful jaffles through to burgers and sweet sensations such as a creme brulee waffle and old-school banana splits.

Rather than replicating the Two Yolks menu, Jem has opted to put an Aussie spin on the burgers, with the addition of beetroot and grilled pineapple. The jaffles – a tasty time machine back to your childhood – have also been an early menu standout, with four different savoury fillings ranging from cheesy baked beans to the gooey four-cheese variety. Those with a sweet tooth can bite into the American classic peanut butter and jam or Nutella and banana.

Thirsty? Melbourne’s ST. ALi beans flow through the coffee machine, or there’s a selection of gelato thickshakes and spiders to sip while you snack.

Pop’s Milk Bar is more than just a place to eat – it’s envisioned as a community hub. “We haven’t opened yet, and I know at least 20 of these guys by name,” says Jem. Operating from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Pop’s Milk Bar is a heartfelt homage to the past while offering a thoroughly modern (and delicious) dining experience.
