The round-up: let’s get cheesy! Where to find the Gold Coast’s best grilled cheese sandwiches

You know what’s great? A grilled cheese sandwich. Sure, it’s one of life’s simple pleasures, but getting it right can be a real art. If you weren’t aware, Thursday April 12 is Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. That’s right, there’s an entire day dedicated to these hot oozing delicacies. So, to get you ready for one of the most important days in the foodie calendar, we’ve put together a handy list of where you can get your hands on a killer grilled cheese sambo.

Good Day Coffee, Tugun: Southern locals will know this is a top-notch toastie hang. Get your paws on Good Day’s smoked, hand-cut ham-from-the-bone toasted sandwich with hot melted gruyere cheese and onion jam for a jazzy twist on an old-school fave.

Le Cafe Gourmand, Mermaid Beach: Well-regarded for its authentic French cafe fare, Le Cafe Gourmand brings the traditional croque monsieur toastie to life with double-smoked cured ham, emmental cheese and bechamel sauce for the ultimate cheese journey.

Paddock Bakery, Miami: If you’re a sucker for fresh-baked bread, then you’ll love Paddock’s Monte Cristo. Pieces of house-baked semi-sourdough are lovingly layered with ham off the bone, monte cheese and mustard, before being topped with oozing bechamel sauce and grilled with extra cheese on top. Plus, you’ll get a sneaky schmear of pickles, sambal or cranberry relish on the side.

Stairwell Coffee, Surfers Paradise: This hidden nook is well-known for its jaffles and cheesy toasted bagels. The simple open-toasted ham and cheese bagel is a great vibe, or go for the piping-hot three-cheese jaffle. They all come paired with a few crisps and a cheeky little cornichon on the side – it’s the little things, right?

Sandwich Bros, Surfers Paradise: The name will probably give it away, but this place is toastie heaven. This Surfers Paradise hang nails the cheesiness, with a three-cheese sandwich featuring gruyere, vintage cheddar and red Leicester on organic sourdough – perfectly crispy on the outside and deliciously gooey on the inside.

Randy Wallhole, Southport: You’ll find a mouth-watering array of toasted cheese-laden sambos here, but our hearts lie with the triple-cheese jaffle with fetta, Swiss and tasty cheeses, toasted into a buttery pocket of goodness. Oh Randy, how we love ye.

Quade & Co, Miami: If you like your morning coffee with a toastie on the side, then this Miami caffeine hang will have you sorted. The combinations are simple (aka ham and cheese) but the addition of a sweet-pickle spread and a hint of chilli flakes takes them to a new level.

Spikexx Espresso, Palm Beach: This southern hang pumps out a mighty-fine series of cheesy jaffles every single day. You can kick it old school with the piping-hot baked bean and Swiss cheese combination for a hot pocket of goodness.
