Like its name suggests, Familiar Takeaway is all about offering plant-based alternatives to food that all people – from vegans to carnivores – are familiar with. While a traditional burger joint doesn’t exactly scream vegan, Familiar’s moreish menu of burgers, hot dogs, nuggets and fries is proudly prepared and served without an animal product in sight, fooling even the most staunch meat eaters. Though, owner Sam Elliot’s approach stems more from the sustainability side of things – he’s aiming to use simple food to shine the light on the environmental benefits of plant-based eating.

Pull up a stool and sink your teeth into the 32 Classic burger (fun fact – we’re told that by eating one plant-based burger instead of a real meat burger you save the same volume of water equivalent to 32 days worth of showering), which is served with a meat-like vegetable protein patty, vegan cheese, pickles, onion, mustard ketchup and mayonnaise. There’s a (not) beef and bacon burger with all of the trimmings, or you can tuck into a fishless-patty burger with pickles, ketchup and tartare sauce. You’ll have plenty of sides to snack on, from crispy chips to onion rings, loaded fries and garlic ‘prawns’, or you can choose an on-the-go salad, falafel wrap or vegan pizza from the cabinet. Finish on a high note and indulge your sweet tooth in a sustainable manner with a rotating selection of delicious locally baked fruit tarts, sweet pies and eye-catching vegan cakes.
