Double Barrel Kitchen makes a delicious transition into autumn with its vibrant new menu

As we head deeper into autumn, many of the city’s kitchens are firing up with some impressive fare, making the most of the wave of new produce that flourishes as the harsh summer heat begins to dim. Since opening its doors last June, Double Barrel Kitchen has proven popular with locals by putting a unique and fresh spin on daytime fare from its digs in the heart of Mermaid Waters. Head chef Adam Huffines has just dropped Double Barrel Kitchen’s all-new menu – and let’s just say that autumn is looking pretty darn delicious.

We’re not going to lie – we love summer. Though, we are pretty lucky here on the Gold Coast because, unlike other cities, the four seasons more or less merge into two – summer and winter. When Adam Huffines created the new menu alongside owners Jess Winters and Peter Tutton, they aimed to make a subtle step into the cooler months with dishes that had elements of ‘comfort food’, whilst maintaining freshness and vibrancy. The all-new smoked trout mille-feuille is a delicious example of the perfect transition to autumn – it’s a deconstructed breakfast pie where the heartiness of hot smoked trout, poached eggs, hollandaise and puff pastry is balanced with the freshness of seared asparagus and bright red cherry tomatoes. The all-day breakfast menu also features the Smashing Pumpkin with roasted butternut crushed with marinated goat fetta and pepitas atop pumpkin sourdough with pumpkin oil, plus a soft-toasted bacon and egg milk bun and a hot smoked salmon croquette.

There’s also a breakfast bruschetta and the jaw-dropping DBK Benny Bagel, where a toasted onion bagel is topped with housemade hollandaise with fillings like beef brisket, chorizo and ham off the bone. Whilst the breakfast spread is served all day, there is a separate lunch menu featuring lighter options like the squid and chorizo salad and the Thai beef salad, alongside the chicken burger with grilled pineapple and Swiss cheese between a soft milk bun and the beef burger with jack cheddar and spicy sweet pickles. If haloumi is your vice (it’s ours) when you’ll want to try the mushroom and haloumi stack, which sits atop a life-changing arancini patty served with a charred capsicum and tomato puree with fried kale crisps. Lunch time fare is always best accompanied by a sneaky sauvignon blanc, a glass of bubbles or an ice-cold stubbie, so you’ll be happy to know the bottle list here has some fabulous drops, alongside Balter tinnies and Stone & Wood goodness.
