Sand Safari transforms Surfers Paradise into a fantasy sandscape

For three magical weeks, from February 12 to February 28, the Surfers Paradise foreshore will come to life with an awe-inspiring display of sculpting talent as part of the 2016 Australian Sand Sculpting Championships, Sand Safari.

A world removed from the dribble castles you used to build as a kid, Sand Safari 2016 will transform Surfers Paradise beach into a fantasy sandscape of DreamWorks characters. Be enthralled as 12 talented sculptors each carve 10 tonnes of sand into magnificent replicas of Kung Fu Panda and his pals, all the while vying for the title of Australian Sand Sculpting Champion 2016 and ultimate sand sculpting glory.

Now in its fifth year, Sand Safari is the foremost sand-and-sea-inspired arts event in the Asia-Pacific region and continues to attract thousands to marvel at the skills of the world’s best professional sand sculptors as they create awe-inspiring, imaginative masterpieces. Vote for your favourite creation by placing a coin in the box at the sculpture, voting opens Friday February 12 and the winners will be crowned at 4:00 pm Sunday February 14. Following the championships, international sculptors will collaborate to create a 40-tonne interactive DreamWorks sculpture on the beach, which can be explored by spectators once completed. Sand Safari offers a fantastic, free family outing with fun and art for all ages.

If you’re keen for a bite before you head down to watch the action unfold, try Betty’s Burgers & Concrete Co. for seriously tasty burgers, Greek Street Grill for gyros and Oliver Brown Belgian Chocolate Cafe for dessert.
