Easy breezy – Jume makes dreamy ethical basics that won’t go out of style
We love to shop sustainably as much as the next person, but this can often seem like an impossible task when the word ‘ethical’ tends to come with an inflated price tag. While you can’t really put a dollar value on the safety of our environment, the (deserved) hype surrounding slow fashion means that it often pushes costs right up. That’s just the way it is, right? Wrong, pal. There are designers out there working to shatter the illusion that ethical production means we have to shell out more. A portmanteau of founder and creator Jessica Blume’s own name, Jume the label has landed on the fashion scene to bring us affordable and ethical basics with a truly dreamy touch.
Jume was born in late January this year out of Jessica’s desire to create quality ethical basics at an affordable price point – and frankly, she’s nailed it. Taking visual cues and inspiration from the likes of old Vogue and Life magazines, the label’s offering bridges the gab between responsible consumerism and a hefty price tag – these are the sorts of pieces that will anchor your wardrobe without costing a week’s pay. The label’s ethical values are rooted in Jessica’s own personal belief that textiles simply shouldn’t be produced if they have a negative impact on the environment, and this is reflected in Jume’s production processes.
The design and manufacturing processes for Jume are bespoke, ethical and hands-on, with Jessica taking the wheel with all things visual. Her background in textiles and attention to detail ensure that each piece retains classic but unique features – think pops of colour and statement collars. Jessica works with a family in Denpasar that makes the Jume label out of their studio, which she has visited to ensure everything is up to standard. Garments are hand-dyed by Jessica herself with plant-based materials, with this process taking place in her Byron studio. The first collection is an ode to Jessica’s time on the Great Ocean Road, reflecting a vibe that is fresh, bright and beachy – you will find crisp white linens, organic cotton dresses and sweet blue stripes making up the offering.
Want to embrace the breezy life? You can shop Jume the label through the online store. The brand has some exciting things in the works (hello, dreamy collabs and capsule collections) so keep your eyes on its Instagram for updates.
