The Grocer: Krimsonberries

With the warmth of summertime comes the promise of the year’s sweetest fruits – and this year berry lovers are in for a treat.

Those who spent childhood summers with red- and purple-stained hands are probably familiar with the joys of picking mulberries fresh from the tree, or feasting on fresh raspberries with a dollop of cream.

Combining the sweetness of the raspberry and the tartness of mulberries, Krimsonberries are an amalgamated delight hitting select grocers’ shelves from November onward. Like all good berries, this mysterious delicacy is filled with antioxidants and packed with nutrients.

Created by Y.V. Fresh – the Yarra Valley-based growers responsible for more than a third of Australia’s raspberries and blackberries – Krimsonberries are grown in Victoria and handpicked at peak sweetness. Shaped like a mulberry but more red in colour, Krimsonberries can be purchased ready to eat from Sourced Grocer locally. You can use Krimsonberries in recipes as you would raspberries and mulberries, or just snack on them fresh.

If you can endure the wait to eat them, you could try topping your Christmas trifle with Krimsonberries, substituting mulberries for them in a sorbet or white chocolate tart, and switching raspberries for them in an iced tea or popsicle recipe.
