Pavement Whispers: Vol 06 January 13

From whispers of new food trucks to basement espresso bars, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Two Teaspoons
Two Teaspoons
is one of Brisbane’s finest producers of gluten-free, dairy-free and refined-sugar-free treats. These delicious cakes, brownies and slices have made their way onto many a dessert counter across Brisbane, and now culinary creator Carissa Saxby is opening a cafe of her own. Located in Jindalee, Two Teaspoons is set to open next week and will sell a variety of meals including burgers, salads and granola, alongside the delectable baked goods that we all love.

Zeus
Yet another new eatery is coming to South Bank in the next few months, with Sydney native Zeus set to open its doors on Little Stanley Street on June 1. Specialising in classic Greek street food, Zeus will be serving up everything from gyros-style pitas to salads, dips and sweets. Expect menu highlights such as The Zeus pita filled with slow-cooked lamb, Aegean slaw, smoked eggplant, onion and parsley, or the Stavros Stavrou pita with grilled haloumi, Aegean slaw, Kalamata olives, caramelised onion, tzatziki, tomato and parsley.

Nest Restaurant and Bar
A new Asian street-food destination is about to hatch on Brisbane City’s Roma Street, as the precinct takes the first steps in a highly anticipated makeover. Nest Restaurant and Bar – a three-part food, drink and lounge experience – is set to open its doors on Friday January 30.  Chef Kenneth Ip has constructed a modern Asian menu spanning breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as a quality drinks list. Brisbane diners wanting to experience the first venue in Roma Street’s new-look dining scene can book via email at [email protected].

The Bone Lorry
If you’ve been keeping tabs on Brisbane’s food-truck scene, you might have heard rumblings of a new entrant currently cruising the streets. The Bone Lorry is the new kid on the block and has been dishing out tender meat on the bone to curious carnivores since it put the key in the ignition just before Christmas. You can find The Bone Lorry at Wandering Cooks most Thursday nights as well as around Brisbane throughout the week.

My Mistress
Clayfield locals can look forward to a new coffee spot this month when My Mistress opens its doors. As the second venture from the team at She Bangs Coffee in Albion, My Mistress will be pleasing the neighbourhood with all-day breakfast, lunch and Genovese coffee. The cafe’s interior will have an industrial feel, featuring exposed-brick walls, visible piping and distressed timber finishings. The initial opening date has been slightly delayed, but My Mistress will hopefully be open by next week.

The Dugout on Ernest
A cute new espresso bar has popped up in South Brisbane, serving top-notch coffees and delicious snacks. Housed inside the bowels of an old brick building in South Bank, The Dugout on Earnest has taken ‘hole in the wall’ to the literal extreme and added a few creative splashes of paint courtesy of local duo Frank + Mimi. Swing by for a coffee and a takeaway snack such as a slice of chunky fruit toast, quinoa porridge with berry chia compote, kale salad with roasted sweet potato and avocado, or a baguette stuffed with Parisian-sliced Bangalow leg ham, gruyere and Dijon. The Dugout is also supplying home-brewers with coffee-making equipment and beans. Keep an eye on The Weekend Edition in the coming weeks for a closer look at this hidden beauty.
