With the coming and going of ships from the Middle East, India, Europe, China and Indonesia to the Malay Peninsula over a number of centuries, Malaysia has become a melting pot of culture and cuisine. Managing to develop and maintain its own unique flavour, Malay food is generally spicy. Its dishes are a fragrant combination of coriander, cumin, lemongrass, kaffir limes leaves, cardamom, star anise and fenugreek.

The Malay word ‘nyonya’, a term of respect for older women, has become synonymous with the distinctive Malaysian-Chinese cooking style. Boundary Street Markets is treated with humble yet youthful nyonya fare, with Annie and Steven from Little Nyonya Kitchen making a wide variety of Malaysian culinary delights such as nasi lemak (Malaysia’s national dish), chicken rendang curry, char kuay teow, mee mamak goreng, fried radish cake and laksa. This friendly market food stall also makes wonderfully colourful and creative desserts including apam balik (a crispy pancake filled with nuts and corn), black sticky rice, little green glutinous rice balls coated with shredded coconut called ondeh-ondeh and various kinds of kuih.

Having learned to cook at the age of eight Annie was taught by her mother and grandmother and the experience shows in her authentic cuisine. Join Steven and Annie at Little Nyonya Kitchen for breakfast or brunch on Sunday with nasi lemak (this dish is an all day affair), char kuay teow, lontong, nyonya kuih and teh tarik (Malaysian milk tea).
