Get your spook on this Friday the 13th

While Halloween is still many months away, February is home to an equally ominous date with Friday the 13th. While we won’t be trick or treating on Black Friday, there are still plenty of events to take part in for spooky souls and scaredy cats.

Whether you believe in superstition or not, there is a certain excitement that goes hand in hand with Friday the 13th. Much like a full moon or Halloween, there is a certain energy in the air that lends itself to mischief and spooky occurrences. This year, there is a bunch of creepy and not-so-creepy happenings that will appeal to horror movie buffs, ghost hunters, hard rockers and those seeking a quiet, paranormal activity-free night in.

If you are keen to throw yourself headfirst into the spirit of Black Friday, start with a good old fashioned horror movie marathon at the New Globe Theatre, who are screening Australian flick, The Babadook and a bunch of gloriously trashy 80s horror films all night long. Event Cinemas across Brisbane and New Farm Cinemas are hosting special screenings of a new Aussie film, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, for those of you who love a good zombie movie. If you want to get right into the thick of it, test your nerves with a ghost tour of the Boggo Road Gaol or Toowong Cemetery, or join in on the latest Brisbane Zombie Walk at the Brisbane Square Library.

The Bearded Lady is getting into the Friday the 13th Spirit with a Black Sabbath Tribute Evening, with Sabbath tunes being spun all night by the appropriately named DJ Death. The Underdog will also be hosting a night of raucous music with metal bands playing until late. While not explicitly Friday the 13th themed, Damian Cowell’s Disco Machine will be turning up the volume for some cheesy 70s disco at Woolly Mammoth, or if you’d rather get into the spooky vibe at home, do so with a six-pack of Black Death Baltic Porter.

We understand that for many of you, Friday the 13th is just another day. If you don’t buy into the supernatural hubbub, there is still plenty to do. Catch The Beautiful Girls live when they play at The Triffid, Angus & Julia Stone at the Riverstage, The Gooch Palms will bring their trademark space-punk to Crowbar and The Last Dinosaurs will play the final iteration of Future Beauty: Up Late.
