Brisbane Writers Festival marks 55 years of inspiration, education and entertainment through words

A very wise man once said, “Don’t look back, you can never look back.” Well no offence to Don Henley, but sometimes casting an eye over what you’ve done can remind you of just how far you’ve come. It’s wild to think that back in 1962, a little old event called the Warana Writers Convention (comprising of just six sessions over one day, mind you) could have flourished so beautifully into what we now know as the Brisbane Writers Festival. Coming into its 55th year, the event is set to bring a wave of the best and brightest minds in the literary business to the State Library of Queensland and QAGOMA from September 6–10 to educate, entertain and inspire. more

Pump up the volume – the Queensland Poetry Festival brings distant voices to the forefront

Your voice is one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal. We’re not just talking about the literal sense of when some cords in your throat rub together and sound comes out – it’s about the larger scope of your identity and what makes you unique. We all have different ways of expressing our true voice but undoubtedly one of the most raw and powerful forms of this is poetry in its many and varied forms. Coming into its 21st year, the Queensland Poetry Festival will sweep the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts as well as a host of other exciting satellite venues with its most ambitious offering to date, celebrating the chorus of inspiring voices in our global community. more

If music and literature had a very cool baby, it would be A Rock & Roll Writers Festival

First thing’s first – rock and roll is so much more than a genre. Rock and roll is an attitude and a way of life that is built around pushing boundaries, sticking it to the man and generally kicking huge amounts of ass. It makes sense, then, that rock and roll forms the basis of one of Brisbane’s most exciting cultural events. Taking over the historic Old Museum for the April 1–2 weekend, A Rock & Roll Writers Festival celebrates and explores the intrinsic relationship between writing and music, utilising the smartest (and boldest) minds in the business. more
