Have an out-of-this-world experience gazing at massive moons and gigantic globes at West Village

Ever since NASA started releasing images of far-flung galaxies from the most powerful telescope launched into space, our obsession with the cosmos has been reignited. Our days of training to be astronauts are probably well behind us (let’s be real, they were never in front of us), so we’re pretty happy to learn that some celestial goodness will soon reveal itself at West Village in the form of three mammoth planet-like installations by artist Luke Jerram. As Frank Sinatra once crooned, “fly me to the moon” …

This September, West Village is shooting for the stars and it’s all part of Brisbane Festival. Across three weeks from September 2–24, the West End shopping and lifestyle precinct will become home to three spectacular large-scale installations of the Moon, Earth and Mars featuring detailed NASA imagery. The awe-inspiring artworks have been created by UK artist Luke Jerram, who uses a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound to bring the planets earth bound. You can explore the dark side of the Moon at Museum of the Moon (September 2–11), see Earth from space with help from 7-m wide globe Gaia (September 13–18) or have a close encounter of the red kind with Mars (September 20–24), with all three set to float above The Common at West Village.

Those who want to get Neil Armstrong-close to the Moon can head to West Village for a Picnic with the Moon on Tuesday September 6, accompanied by a soundscape centred around Indigenous storytelling of the Moon and stars. With delicious bites and otherworldly art on the cards, it’s safe to say you can count us in! Pop into West Village this September and experience the majesty of the Moon, Mars and Earth like you’ve never seen before. To learn more, head to the Brisbane Festival website.
