To Bathe photography exhibition

Religious ritual is captured in the To Bathe photography exhibition

Photojournalist Nigel Brennan is presenting his first photography exhibition since he was released from his widely publicised ordeal as a hostage in Somalia.

Held at Brisbane Powerhouse on May 24 from 6:00 pm, the exhibition titled To Bathe is not only Nigel’s first return to photojournalism, but is also the first foray into photojournalism for his partner Alana Hankey. The series of photographs was taken at this year’s Kumbh Mela festival in India, where 120 million Hindu worshippers converged on Allahabad to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges River, which is believed to hold drops of an elixir of eternal life.

The spiritual festival was the largest-known gathering of humans in history, and the peaceful nature of Kumbh Mela sent messages of peace and harmony across the globe.

While observing the celebrations that only occur once every 12 years, Nigel and Alanna captured a series of photographs that celebrate the peaceful nature of ritual, and the joy that comes with hope and worship. The selection of 30 images to be shown at the exhibition features scenes of bathing, vibrant celebration and portraits of gurus and pilgrims. A portion of profits from the sale of limited-edition prints will be donated to Maiti Nepal, an organisation that works to protect children and women from abuse and trafficking.
