Local fanciful folk The Phoncurves launch EP

From Ronnie and the Ronettes to the Spice Girls, a group of girls banded together in song isn’t something to be scoffed at. Joining the ranks of women in music are a couple of local lasses with a bounty full of singing and guitar skills – meet Brisbane’s The Phoncurves.

The band is actually a duo, consisting of Abbie Roberts and Naomi Burrell, two pals who met while studying together at university. Discovering each other’s passion for music, they joined together their talents and began to scrawl out tune after tune, soon emerging as a fully fledged musical act.

The band’s style is a mish-mash of indie and pop with a dash of folk thrown in for good measure. While this style of music is ever so popular right now, it’s the girls’ use of smoky voices and simple guitar that makes them stand out from the pack. Also impressive is the group’s soft harmonising, which is reminiscent of a bluegrass melody or folk ballad of yesteryear. Take a listen for yourself with The Phoncurves’ catchy single ‘Walkin’ and charming renditions of classics from The Kinks and The Beatles.

The duo has now amassed enough of a collection of singles to release its first self-titled EP. Not only is it written by the girls’ own hands but, impressively, self-produced and self-mixed. Join the girls along with support acts Go Violets and Jodie Grinsted when they take a trip to X & Y on October 5.
