Iconic surfboard manufacturer McTavish Surfboards has released two exclusive, limited-production collections for the appreciators of quality craftsmanship – the Diamond Sea X Shibori and the Noosa ’66. So, if you’re after a surfboard that is like no other (literally), then get on this.

Based in Byron Bay, McTavish has been long-renowned for being an independent, low-volume manufacturer of high-quality surfboards. Bob McTavish, who founded his namesake company in 1962, and his son Ben have collaborated with the small, dedicated McTavish team to create the impressive new releases. The Diamond Sea X Shibori series, which forms an exclusive part of the summer 2016 range, is a unique design collaboration with Pepa Martin and Karen Davis, who are the founders and creative visions behind boutique textile agency, Shibori – named after an ancient Japanese dying technique. Shibori’s unique take on this ancient Japanese tradition has seen its signature aesthetic projected all over the world – and now you’ll find their unique visuals in Ben McTavish’s Diamond Sea surfboard design, which features a half Shibori blue resin tint that chaotically meets a subtle white resin pigment in the middle of the surfboard. Just one of the three boards produced remains for sale (check it out here), with the first selling to a Japanese client.

The Noosa ’66 collection features just 20 hand-shaped, signed and numbered perfect replicas of the exact board that Bob McTavish designed and rode on Queensland point breaks throughout the mid 60s – it’s a design that has also influenced many Australian shapers over the years. It’s pretty cool to think that this unique collection of 20 boards have been shaped by the same person who first created them 50 years on – and it’s even cooler that the McTavish brand remains so dynamic, refreshing and sought-after in a world of mass-producing mega-companies.
