Bagels, burgers and $20 coffees – First Fruits gathers steam with a new Labrador coffee space

Coffee is a big deal. Whether you’re a one-a-day drinker or you’re known for slinging three before morning tea, most of us are pretty discerning when it comes to our morning brew – and rightly so. If you’re on the northern end and you really do give a damn about your morning caffeine hit, then you’ll be pleased to learn that popular Ashmore espresso bar, First Fruits, has spread its stimulating goods even further with a second venue in Labrador.

The new northern space marks a passion-driven next step for First Fruits co-owner and head roaster Daniel Smith, who has expanded into a full-blown coffee-and-food offering after garnering hefty following from avid sippers at the flagship Ashmore coffee nook, which opened in 2016. Espressos will still be flowing as normal back at Ashmore (phew), but if you’re keen to pair your piccolo with a bacon and egg roll, then make tracks to the brand-new Labrador digs. The all-day breakfast menu will have you choosing from simple eats like bagels (boiled and baked on site) loaded with sweet and savoury toppings, simple-yet-tasty toasted sandwiches, right through to sunny-side egg and crispy-bacon rolls, maple-bacon and banana pancakes, acai bowls and a colourful eggs benny, lovingly drizzled with housemade hollandaise.

Despite the expansion into an all-day food offering, coffee is still king at First Fruits’ new locale, with the roasting for both venues, as well as wholesale and retail, done on site. When it comes time to order your coffee, the talented baristas will select the best beans for you, depending on how you take your brew – there’s a house blend for the flat-white drinkers and some tasty rotating single origins for those that like it black. For the ultimate coffee connoisseurs, there’s a Panama Geisha filter coffee pouring at the moment for $20 a pop – yes, twenty smackers for a cuppa. The majority of us have never (ever) dropped that much dosh on a coffee, but we’ll certainly admit that this has us very, very intrigued. If the energy from First Fruits’ passionate baristas rubs off on you, then you can enrol yourself into one of the weekly on-site coffee classes – there’s everything from general coffee appreciation through to top-level barista training.
