Dream in colour at the city’s first pop-up Golden Ticket Motel
Let’s be honest, hotel art can be pretty questionable at times. Usually depicting some kind of abstract ocean view, the generic pieces are hung on plain walls and then largely forgotten. The Golden Ticket Motel is the antithesis of that. What the heck is the Golden Ticket Motel we hear you ask? Boy, are we glad you did …
The Golden Ticket Motel is the Gold Coast’s brand-new immersive overnight art experience. The Gold Coast-born start-up, founded by Lucy Fisher, is here to change the way we view hotel art by working with artists to create immersive art experiences that completely take over a space – we’re talking walls, soft furnishings, even the floor and ceiling – nothing is off-limits. Billed as ‘art you can sleep in,’ the Golden Ticket Motel is intended to tap into the global trend towards immersive event experiences by creating a unique overnight tourism product in collaboration with local artists during a time when there are limited exhibition opportunities for working artists in the area.
Guests of the very first Golden Ticket Motel pilot experience at Surf Street Motel in Nobby Beach will stay in a Deluxe Queen Room outfitted in the colourful, experimental and cheeky style of local artist Dion Parker. Ordinarily, it’s frowned upon to draw on walls at a hotel, but at the Golden Ticket Motel, Dion has managed to transform every single square cm of space into a canvas for his psychedelic creations – think purple shag carpet, mushrooms and smiling daisies everywhere you turn. Each room is open for a limited time only – sometimes three months, sometimes 12 months. The grand plan is to create these pop-up rooms in various other locations, however, for now, the only Golden Ticket Motel x Dion Parker room is at Surf Street Motel. Book a night here.
