Veja and Rick Owens collaborate to create kicks with conscience
When it comes to sneakers, not all are created equal. Some (read: most) are made from various types of plastic and unsustainable rubber, which doesn’t bode well for you in terms of comfort but it’s also not great news for Mother Earth. Thankfully there’s a fashion-led alternative from French footwear company Veja and lauded fashion designer Rick Owens, who have come together for a second time to set a new standard for kicks with conscience.
If you’re a fan of Dad sneakers (you know the ones, the kind that men of a certain age tend to sport with jeans), aesthetically the two new styles from Veja and Rick Owens are right up your alley. Combining the designer’s minimalist style and Veja’s transparency, the union has yielded two new styles – a performance runner and a vegan hiking shoe that offer comfort and sustainability in one pretty package. The runner is a reinterpretation of the version that strutted down the runway during Rick’s fall/winter 2019 showing, while the vegan hiker features Owens’ signature double back tag as well as the mega lacing detailing – also from the runway collection.
Beyond exceptional good looks, the shoes are woven in a 3D wool knit – the material and seamless technique provides breathability, elasticity and comfort. Taking things a step further, the vegan hiking style was created for performance and protection on rough and natural terrain. As an alternative to leather, the upper is made from corn waste – reducing the usage of petroleum-based materials – while the midsole and outsole are made from recycled and natural-based materials, recycled plastic bottles and Amazonian rubber. The runner style is available in three colours, crude beige, black and grey and retails at $400.00 and the hiker is available in white and full black for $355.00.
