Cult tailoring house P. Johnson unveils new showroom on James Street
Last month, the luxury precinct of James Street welcomed one of Australia’s leading names in fashion – P. Johnson. The Sydney-born fashion house has added Brisbane to its tight list of locations, finally bringing its quiet-luxury to Queensland.
James Street continues to prove itself as one of fashion’s most sought-after addresses, adding the likes of Le Labo, July and Sir. to its already renowned roster of residents in the last year or two. For Tom Riley, P. Johnson’s co-owner and creative director, James Street’s reputation made the location a no-brainer for the in-demand brand’s next opening.
“The James Street zone is probably Australia’s best contrived and most replete retail and hospitality precinct,” explains Tom. “There is little need to leave the area when staying in Brisbane. It feels so comfortable, the energy is strong there.”
P. Johnson was founded in 2009 by Patrick Johnson – the Adelaide-born wunderkind designer committed to crafting elegant and concise wardrobes. Guided by a mission to contribute to ‘a life well lived’, the P. Johnson brand has garnered a cult following in recent years thanks to its luxe staples and tailored suiting. Whilst the slow-living purveyor has said they don’t look to open several bricks-and-mortar locations, the brand felt it owed its dedicated Brisbane community a store. “We just want to have enough that we can better service a loyal clientele and give them the best possible time with us,” says Tom.
Last month, P. Johnson Brisbane opened its doors, turning the old Project site into its latest suit-slinging outpost. Designed by Tasmin Johnson, the new showroom has the same eclectic but curated interior the brand has become known for. “We wanted a freshness and openness to the space, more levity, that felt right for Brisbane,” adds Tom. Beyond the already-converted clientele, the new showroom brings the fashion house and its elegant and ‘pure’ designs to a fresh audience. For new fans, Tom defines the P. Johnson experience as simple. “The gist is we take the clothes seriously, we take the client seriously but hopefully don’t take ourselves too seriously.”
