Open Frame 2013

Open Frame Festival explores music and media

Arriving at IMA on Thursday August 22, the annual Room40 event Open Frame Festival is an exploratory celebration of music and media.

With a focus on seeking out the transformative and transgressive practices of sound, the eighth annual Open Frame Festival brings together a collection of artists for a multi-event program that follows the unified theme, ‘The Future is Noise’. Italian futurist Luigi Russolo’s 1913 philosophy regarding the art of noises (l’arte dei rumori) will be responded to during the festival’s scheduled events. Each artist participating in this year’s program is linked through his or her diverse approach to sound.

The 2013 festival launches with two in-depth happenings at the IMA space. From the UK, musician and author David Toop will join fellow panellists Greg Hainge and Amelia Barikin for a discussion on Thursday August 22, which is followed closely by David’s insightful event alongside Japanese sound pioneer Akio Suzuki on Thursday August 29. In its Brisbane stretch, the festival will continue on to the Brisbane Powerhouse for a series of events from Friday September 13.
