When it comes to names that foster the true spirit of homegrown creatives, Queensland Theatre is right up there with the best. As Australia’s third-largest theatre company, it makes sense that its productions should have a home that is worthy of both their greatness and cultural significance. After a careful incubation period, Queensland Theatre is proud to lift the curtain on its brand-new performance space that is all its own – welcome to the Bille Brown Theatre.

The task of executing the Bille Brown vision was entrusted to leading multidisciplinary design practice Conrad Gargett, using its extensive experience with arts-based projects to deliver a space that perfectly marries function and style. No feature has been overlooked – from the theatre itself to the adjoining bar, foyer and courtyard areas, great care has been taken to heighten both the audience and performer experience. The project has been in the works since 2016 and was finally unveiled on Thursday October 11, named for well-renowned actor, director and Queensland Theatre kingpin Bille Brown.

Taking up residence in the former site of the West End Brewery, the Bille Brown Theatre employs a functional and industrial aesthetic that complements the legacy of the existing site – as well as the surrounding arts precinct. One of the key points of the design was to position the theatre as an affordable and accessible entity for all manners of performing arts in the state, providing a space that is both large in size but retains an intimate feel. As well as its sleek aesthetic, the Bille Brown Theatre has been decked out with a number of fantastic features that will elevate the technical possibilities of future productions – a smart layout and innovative installation methods ensure that the theatre is well equipped to handle all manner of amazing works that will pass through its doors.

The Bille Brown Theatre was officially opened on Thursday October 11 and is currently playing host to Queensland Theatre’s stunning production Nearer the Gods – to check it out for yourself, grab tickets here.
