The Reggae Beats Weekend List

In the spring of 1979, French musician Serge Gainsbourg released his 13th album Aux Armes et cætera, which was recorded in Kingston, Jamaica. Gathering together some of the island’s best reggae musicians including Rita Marley, Serge infused his usual French pop with the local sound. Kick back to Aux Armes et cætera spinning on the record player, or witness some reggae beats of a more energetic tempo down at South Bank this weekend.

A raw, freestyle portrait of life on the streets of Cali, Colombia, URBAN reveals a city of melded joy and violence, where dance and music are the safe escapes. Presented by Circolombia, URBAN has traversed Colombia to Paris and now to Brisbane for its Queensland premiere, featuring the best of the Colombian national circus school Circo Para Todos. This vivid live show sees a young cast perform wild-yet-mastered acrobatics and dance to reggaeton and Latin hip-hop beats. Tickets to witness this captivating new style of circus are still available at The Courier-Mail Piazza box office for a Thursday-night show and two Friday-night performances.

Continue your reggae weekend theme with a little jerk chicken action at JAMROC Jamaican Jerk Chicken in Fortitude Valley, or get creative in the kitchen with the addictive spices of local company, The Ja Joint. Bringing the authentic flavours of Jamaica to the Australian kitchen, The Ja Joint reveals its simple family cooking secrets through a range of Jamaican marinades, rubs and sauces.
