Attend a kokedama workshop by Neon Patina

Kokedama is the traditional Japanese art of making moss balls. Traditionally known as the poor man’s bonsai, these garden creations are now regularly spotted as features in designer restaurant fit-outs, nook fillers in bohemian cafes and green additions on home balconies.

Kristen Kocev from Neon Patina is an interior and architecture design student who has always been interested in gardening and making things with her hands. Through Neon Patina, Kristen makes and sells kokedame and terrariums as well as air plants in the form of dream catchers made from vintage and repurposed items. The plant life ranges from rainforest ferns to succulents, the glassware for the terrariums is recycled and the string for the moss balls is secondhand.

At the Sunday Gourmet Market at Westfield Chermside, Kristen is passing on her love of gardening through her kokedama workshops on the fourth Sunday of every month. Participants can register for the workshop on the Neon Patina Facebook page and will be supplied with moss, string and a plant along with guidance on how to put it together and keep it alive. After the workshop you can take home your creation, make some more or gift it to a loved one.
