Boredom-busters for the kids these school holidays

Boredom-busters for the kids these school holidays

Christmas doesn’t just symbolise an events-filled month of yuletide soirees but, for parents, the commencement of the school holidays. Luckily for Brisbane residents, there is plenty of festive fun planned around town to help keep the rug rats occupied during the break.

If it’s dinosaurs you are after, head straight to the Queensland Museum at South Bank. Explore-a-saurus is an exhibition that encourages kids to dig for fossils and bones and explore the prehistoric world. You’ll find a replica of the world-famous dinosaur trackway and fossils aged more than 100 million years old.

The Sciencentre is just as child friendly, with a summer holiday program to be in place from January 3–28. The Rapt in Reptiles Museum Stage Show will be a part of the busy timetable of activities available. The live reptile show is presented by rangers from the South East Queensland Wildlife Centre, with lizards, turtles and snakes galore. If it is an artistic side you are instead attempting to encourage, take the kids to the centre’s Paper Zoo in early January, where they can learn to master the art of origami.

Gold Coast kids can indulge in some festivities by the seaside, with various activities held at Surfers Paradise Foreshore up until Christmas Day. Santa and his workshop will be hanging out along the promenade for a Christmas Storyland pantomime each day, and there will also be a mailbox for the kids to post Santa their wishlists and letters, as well as a Cavill Mall Carols by Candlelight held in the evening.
