Whether you’re a scrawler or a drawer, unite with other likeminded papier enthusiasts at the Zine & Indie Comic Symposium (ZICS) this weekend. A three-day celebration of the zine and comic mediums, ZICS will run from Friday August 29 to Sunday August 31 at The Edge at SLQ. The team from local weekly webcomic LUV Comics will be hosting a Pecha Kucha-style presentation on opening night and presenting on a panel about gender and sexuality, while DIY screenprinting workshops and a large-scale painting battle will also entertain. more

Join the decadent celebrations of Easter at the lively Giant Easter Egg Hunt in Clontarf. You won’t be hunting for one prized giant egg, but rather for thousands of smaller eggs, giving everyone a chance to walk away with a sizeable haul of chocolate riches. As well as the hunt, there’ll also be games and face painting for the kids. The hunt kicks off at 3:00 pm on Saturday April 19, and will be held at the Star Christian Church. The Easter Bilby bounds into The Workshops Rail Museum

This little character may not yet possess quite the same level of notoriety as its chocolate-baring bunny friend, but things are about to change for the Easter Bilby. Making its way to The Workshops Rail Museum’s Outback Easter event on Sunday April 6, the beloved nocturnal marsupial will be joining its native friends – including non-venomous snakes, lizards, birds and fellow small mammals – at the one-day event led by Wild Rangers Wildlife Encounters. Young visitors can learn more about Australia’s fauna, meet the Easter Bilby, receive an Easter treat and smile for a family photo during the event. Plunge into Deep Oceans at Queensland Museum

Showcasing fascinating real-life sea creatures, and some of the mythical ones we wish were real, Deep Oceans is a new exhibition presented by Queensland Museum. The exhibition offers the chance to get up-close with some fearsome monsters direct from the bottom of the deep-blue wet thing, and runs from Friday March 28 until Monday October 6. Those stopping by will have a chance to see a real specimen of a giant squid from the museum’s collection, alongside some of the crawlies that have inspired myths about sea monsters. There will be hands-on activities for curious folk of all ages, and a life-size replica of the bathysphere will be on show. more

Now in its second year, the Heritage Bank Volunteer of the Year Award provides an opportunity for those who generously give up their time for the greater, or smaller, good to be shown some appreciation by those who notice. Approximately 1.2 million Queenslanders volunteer their time and efforts to enrich the social, cultural and economic lives of fellow Queensland residents each year. Without their tireless assistance, many groups and services valued by the community may not exist. You can nominate a volunteer, or vote for someone you think deserves to win via the Heritage Bank website or Facebook page. Brisbane is set to gain a third Apple Store, when the tech giant opens its doors in the historic MacArthur Chambers this Friday January 17. Opening at 10:00 am, the Apple Store is giving away a commemorative t-shirt to the first 1,000 customers – no purchase necessary. Following openings at Westfield Chermside and Carindale, this third store for Brisbane is also the brand’s first to be set in a heritage building in Australia.
