Iconic photographer Cindy Sherman has long been one of the most unique and intriguing creative minds since the early days of her career in the 1970s. Her portrait work has been credited as a major influence for several contemporary photographers and her prize-winning endeavours are seen as some of the finest dissections of narcissism, celebrity, femininity and identity. From May 28 to October 3, QAGOMA will be exhibiting a series of Cindy Sherman’s work in two parts – the first is work made in conjunction with fashion houses Balenciaga and Chanel and a new body of work that will be shown for the first time outside of New York.

Cindy Sherman also features a series of extra activities and events taking place throughout the exhibition’s duration. Sundays with Cindy will see a series of events such as zine fairs, workshops and artist talks on May 29, July 3, August 28, and September 25. Cindy Sherman Up Late will see GOMA transform into a night-time hotspot with pop-up bars, after hours talks from contemporary storytellers and live music from a range of all-female musicians. From May 28 to August 28, the Australian Cinémathèque will be hosting In Character ­– a collection of film screenings featuring casts of actresses who have challenged expectations of behaviour and physicality onscreen. Other events include an evening discussion program through GOMA Talks as well as guided tours throughout the exhibition’s tenure.
