It’s Still A Secret

The team behind Woolloongabba’s Can You Keep A Secret? doubled its Brisbane presence in 2021 with sibling venue It’s Still A Secret, a live-music bar and community hub located in South Brisbane. CYKAS? owner Emily Jane took over the gorgeous heritage-listed Coronation Hotel building that sits on the corner of Hope Street and Montague Road – a site that will be familiar to many as the former home of The Joynt and, more recently, The Milk Factory. Like its Woolloongabba sibling, It’s Still A Secret looks to attract genuine, like-minded folks that share Emily’s passion for local music and inclusive hospitality. To do this, Emily and her team have refurbished the building’s (affectionately dubbed Francis Stanley in honour of the architect responsible for its design) interior and outdoor spaces, including enhancing the venue’s street-facing band room, overhauling the existing bar area, expanding the outdoor beer garden space. The venue’s visual identity boasts a kind of homely flamboyance across the interior and a 1960s garden feel in the dog-friendly outdoor area. Emily is placing a strong emphasis on non-alcoholic options for the temperance crowd, with booze-free sips available alongside stiffer stuff like cocktails (crafted using elevated first-pour spirits), craft beers (ales from Aether Brewing are available on tap) and vino that you won’t readily find at your local bottle shop. A to-be-installed kitchen will be used to whip up tapas-style bites for hungry punters. The music room is equipped with a new sound desk and gear, with bookings following a genre-less curatorial ethos focused around giving love to original acts and DJs.
