Cafe Gia

You may have noticed the old convenience store on Butterfield Street in Herston has been given a makeover, transforming this week into Cafe Gia. The cafe is the combined project of mother-daughter trio Gina, Isabella and Alessandra, who – as the daughter and granddaughters of Michael Gambaro – have had their fair share of hospitality experience. Cafe Gia dishes up homestyle meals for breakfast and lunch, offering plenty of gluten-free options and using fresh produce plucked from the cafe’s on-site herb garden. On the all-day menu you’ll find the likes of mushrooms sauteed with spinach, haloumi, pine nuts, fresh garlic and basil pesto on sourdough toast, and zucchini and corn fritters served with avocado sour cream. The ladies have taken a leaf out of nonna’s book too – think Italian baked eggs served on Napoletana sauce topped with mozzarella and sourdough, and nonna’s meatball panini with melting mozzarella.
