Good morning, sunshine – how to get into riding to work

For many people, the daily commute to work is at least a bit of a drag. Whether you’re perfecting your car karaoke during a peak-hour traffic jam or doing your best impression of a sardine on the train, these aren’t exactly ideal day-starting situations. Ever watched people breeze past on bikes on their way to the office and thought it looks pretty dreamy? You would be right – no gridlock, some fresh air, a few extra dollars in the pocket and a good workout sounds like a sweet deal to us. If you’ve thought about riding to work but didn’t know where (or how) to start, we’ve teamed up with Cycling Brisbane, an initiative of Brisbane City Council, to get you prepped for the two-wheeled way to travel. more

Feelin’ good – kick-start your summer goals with free workout sessions

If you’re anything like us, getting into a post-winter fitness regime can be a little (read: extremely) challenging at first. When it comes to the cold and steely interior of a gym versus the lure of a cheeseburger, how is one to proceed? Look, the easiest way to actually get off your bum and into action is to make it fun and eliminate the pressure aspect, which is exactly what the Medibank Feel Good Program is about. Returning to the South Bank Parklands from October 2 until December 2, the program features a range of free outdoor fitness classes that welcome all ages and fitness levels. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too! more

Cycling is the bomb – whether you’re into a bit of recreational two-wheel action or a full-blown lycra lover, the benefits of the sport really speak for themselves. Not only does it do wonders for your general fitness and wellbeing (hello, cardio) but it’s also pretty darn environmentally responsible. One of the wheelie gang’s biggest events is drawing closer – on Sunday October 15, the Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle Challenge will see thousands of riders pedalling from concrete to coast in the name of charity and endurance, coming together for one of the cycling community’s most rewarding experiences. more

It’s show time! The Ekka celebrates 140 years of Queensland culture (and strawberry sundaes)

Some things are just so quintessentially Queensland that it almost physically hurts. If someone is to mention the Big Pineapple, The Veronicas, XXXX Gold or Stefan’s Skyneedle, we undoubtedly feel a twang of pride deep within – that’s a seriously impressive legacy in anyone’s eyes for sure. Jokes aside, there is one thing that stands above all as being the cornerstone of our state’s rich culture – the Royal Queensland Show, or The Ekka as it's more affectionately known. This year sees the show celebrating its 140th edition, returning to its home at the Brisbane Showgrounds from August 11–20 to celebrate the best that our fair state has to offer across food, fashion and all things fun. more

Snow, skates and sleds return to King George Square for the new Skating At Festival

It is an irrefutable fact that Brisbane winters are an absolute delight. We would never ever complain about our amazingly comfortable season, but sometimes we can’t help but wonder what it would be like if our town went all frosty on us – kind of like how Ariel has a sweet life under the sea but craves a taste of that land-based life. Well the good news is we don’t have to go making a shady deal with a sea witch to quell our curiosity and desire – the beloved Winter Festival has undergone a makeover and re-emerged as the Skating At Festival, bringing a heady dose of après ski vibes to King George Square from June 16 to July 9. more

Show your true Queensland colours – the Maroon Festival brings us fun, food and footy

Some things are just so Brisbane it hurts – if you know what we mean when we refer to Milton mangoes and the Brown Snake, you’re on that serious sunshine state level (just FYI, we’re talking about XXXX and the Brisbane River in case you didn’t know). Another thing that gets Queenslanders seriously fired up is a little sports match called the State of Origin, so if you’re a fan then you should probably be sitting down to read this – for the first time ever, we are getting an all-in celebration dedicated to everything Queensland and rugby league! The Maroon Festival will be hitting the South Bank Parklands from May 28–31, bringing with it a wave of fun, food and (of course) footy. more

Dive into five days of festival fun at the Australian Swimming Championships

Us Aussies as a general population are pretty into our sports, both watching and participating. It makes sense seeing as we boast some of the best athletes in the world, and one of the places where we dominate hardest is in the pool. From April 9–13, we will have the chance to take our support from the couch to the lanes when the Australian Swimming Championships head to the Brisbane Aquatic Centre. It’s not just about the laps, either – this year the event is taking on a festival-style atmosphere with the opening of a brand-new Centre Lane entertainment precinct. more

Fitness made fun and free at South Bank

Let's be honest – the idea of getting out of bed to do 100 squats is hardly enticing, no matter how tight your buns of steel might get. We all have trouble staying in shape when the cooler months keep us indoors, but it's a whole lot easier when the exercise is actually fun and also free. South Bank’s program of low-impact classes can keep the belly at bay and make you feel great well into the change of seasons. more
