California Design 1930–1965

California Design 1930–1965 rolls in to QAG

California’s best exports – Eames designs, surf rock, mid-century beach fashions and West Coast cuisine – are coming to the Queensland Art Gallery in November.

California Design 1930–1965: Living in a Modern Way celebrates the many merits of our fellow sunshine state with a series of exhibitions, tours, talks, events and performances at QAG. Opening day, Saturday November 2, will bring the comic voice of Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross to QAG and an international curator’s lecture to GOMA. Discussions will continue over the opening weekend, while Sunday November 3 will see Endless Summer Sundays bringing swing, vintage fashion, old-school glamour and design to the QAG Sculpture Courtyard from 12:00–4:00 pm. Endless Summer Sundays will repeat in December and February, so surfer guys and Gidget-inspired gals can enjoy the exhibition and entertainment while sipping on homemade lemonade and hoeing into such snacks as pulled-pork nachos.

California Design Up Late will treat Brisbane’s ears to the sounds of such groups as The Break, Cub Sport, Sonny and the Sunsets (from California), Bandito Folk and Velociraptor, plus such solo acts as Courtney Barnett and The Drones’ frontman Gareth Liddiard. Attendees to the Up Late sessions will have an opportunity to see the exhibition after hours, hear talks from local designers and be treated to the Taste of California offerings. Tasty menu options will include wagyu beef burgers, fries and aioli, as well as Cali vegetarian options.

The California Design Pop-up Shop will be appearing at QAG’s Stanley Street entrance, with Californian-inspired merchandise, products and publications for sale. For a full list of the talks, tours and lectures, including such topics as ‘The History of Jeans’, ‘The Birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Teen Idols and Surf Sounds’ and the My Gen 50+ events, visit the QAGOMA website.
