Save the Bonded Stores in Margaret Street

The characteristics of a city’s buildings contribute to the spirit and soul of a city, and affect how its inhabitants feel moved, or otherwise, when they cast their gaze down a laneway, up at a tall building and across the cityscape.

In the past, Brisbane has seen its character-filled buildings torn down to make way for new developments. While building a modern city to incorporate growth is important, preserving history and the beauty of a 100-year-old structure amongst the shiny new skyscrapers is also important. When we travel to Paris, it’s not the business district filled with tall office towers that catches our eye – it’s the cathedrals, the ancient landmarks, the unspoiled shopfronts that proudly display the city’s age and the care taken to uphold this history.

Along Margaret Street in Brisbane City sits three 100-year-old buildings, with ‘O’Reilly’s Bonded Stores Estd 1864’ written on the facade of the middle structure. While they’ve sat mostly dormant for the past few years, with a little love and elbow grease these beautiful structures could be transformed and put to good use. Instead the owners have submitted an application to demolish the buildings, making way for a temporary dog park. To have your say on the demolition, you can sign the petition and find out more information on the Brisbane Heritage website.
