Celebrate the return of Cat Power

Celebrate the return of Cat Power

The USA may be renowned for its steady stream of pop princesses forming fast careers and devoted fan clubs like nobody’s business. But this crowd of polished performers makes the musicians who don’t fall into that category stand out all the more. One of the best examples of this is the dynamic Cat Power, who will return to Brisbane next week with a gig at The Tivoli.

Cat Power (a far more rock and roll moniker than her original name, Charlyn Marshall) emerged from the 1990s with a unique musical identity. The fiery solo artist began with music that blended folk and blues and has become distinctly more electronic as the years have gone by, but has maintained the mixture of genres for which she has become known.

Cat is currently touring Australia and New Zealand, joined by an all-female backing band who each went through a lengthy audition process for the lauded slot. When the lady visits Brisbane’s The Tivoli on March 5, she will be playing songs from her latest album, Sun – her first self-penned material release in six years. It’s not just new tunes that Cat is returning with – she’s recently debuted a drastically different cropped cut from her traditional long locks, as well as upped the ante of her stage presence with plenty of light and LED additions.
