Street art and street style meet at The Culprit Club in Winn Lane

A new pocket-sized gallery and retail space has opened in one of Fortitude Valley’s most popular laneways. The Culprit Club brings graffiti culture to the masses and embraces the vibrant nature of the art form.

Sarah Hazlehurst is a Brisbane-based writer with a fierce passion for street art. After encountering the world of graffiti art while exploring some of Brisbane’s abandoned buildings, Sarah was blown away by the vibrancy of the work and the creative people she met in her journey. After helping to curate and host local creative events (not to mention writing for publications such as No Cure Magazine), Sarah encountered the stigma associated with the word ‘graffiti’ and the frustratingly negative attitude towards street art in general. As a way to showcase some of the best aspects of the culture and provide a space for artists to collaborate, educate and express themselves, Sarah created her own gallery and store, The Culprit Club. Named as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the illegality of graffiti, The Culprit Club is part miniature gallery, part street culture retail hub situated in the space formerly occupied by A Love Supreme Records.

The Culprit Club packs a large amount of goods into a small space, flush with racks of clothing, street art publications, toys and even a Mortal Kombat arcade machine from Frankie’s Arcades. All threads have been sourced from independent apparel brands such as Grand Scheme Supply Co and Illeqwip, and notable artistic publications such as No Cure Magazine, King Brown, Artillery and back issues of Trunk Junk are available in store. The Culprit Club will also be selling paint supplies from Ironlak. Every month The Culprit Club will be hosting exhibitions of work from local, interstate or international artists, (you’ll have to check in to know which one it’s going to be) in addition to pop-up events, workshops and games nights. As a supportive and collaborative endeavour, The Culprit Club encourages all artists to get in touch about projects and artwork for future exhibitions.

The Culprit Club will be hosting its launch exhibition on Friday July 15 from 6:00 pm.
