The Weekend Series: make the most of your time at Splendour in the Grass
So you are one of the lucky ones that managed to nab a ticket to Splendour this year – congratulations! Now we are sure that you’ve already packed your bag and planned your itinerary, but we just wanted to give you a few suggestions for making the absolute most out of your long weekend at the festival.
Get your craft on
If you are a creative type that likes working with your hands, we’ve found a great way to kill some time between musical acts. Splendour in the Craft is back again for 2016 with a killer offering of workshops that can teach you how to create a range of items, including pillows, tote bags, paper chandeliers as well as up-cycling clothes, making apomogies and more. Catch sessions with I make you wear it’s Rachel Burke, Patience Hodgson from The Grates and Monkey Monkey Shake Shake.
Eat your weight in festival food
Splendour in the Grass is also known as a foodies festival, which might seem odd to you if you always settle for hot chips and dagwood dogs. If you look a little bit harder you can find some incredible bites, with such a huge variety that you can ensure you never eat the same thing twice. This year there are food vendors offering gluten-free, vegan and paleo options, plus the Splendour Food Halls have everything from burgers and pizzas, to gozlemes, langos and German sausages. If that’s not enough to satisfy your hunger, several food trucks will be on hand including The Nighthawk Diner, Monster Rolls and Red Robin Supper Truck.
Check out The Small Suburb
Returning to Splendour in the Grass in 2016 is The Very Small Suburb – a boutique district filled with some of the best fashion, hair and beauty pop-ups and tasty food. Make sure you look your fleekest with touch ups at Rimmel or Kiehl’s, buy some new threads from Moondust Merchants, Mr. Simple or Afends, or just grab a bite from Bourke St Bakery, Doughnut Time or Gelato Messina’s pop-up stalls.
Increase your knowledge
The Splendour Forum will be a great place to learn a little bit more about current events as well as to be inspired and provoked into positive action. Throughout the day, several great thinkers will be discussing a range of issues including politics, activism and music in panels, debates, interviews, Q&A sessions, documentaries, literary salons, philosophical talks and more. Catch the likes of Q&A’s Tony Jones, Marieke Hardy from Women of Letters and Dr Karl Kruszelnicki as he discusses great moments in science.
Draw out your extra-long weekend
We all experience the post-Splendour withdrawals for at least a fortnight after the festival ends, and having to face the realities of life on the Monday after Splendour is sometimes too hard to bear. Our recommendation – take your time weaning yourself off the buzzing highs of the weekend by relaxing in Byron Bay for a spell. Swing through for a pit stop to check out The Farm, grab a cleansing juice or smoothie from Top Shop, hit the beach for some surf and sun or park yourself at a local cafe for a decent feed (if you ended up ignoring our food tips – for shame!) before heading home, fantasising about next year all the way back.
