David Fagan has been at the epicentre of Queensland stories for decades. Throughout his nearly 20 years at The Courier-Mail where he served as editor in chief, David witnessed firsthand as the state underwent several key political and economic shifts. By 2014, David would join QUT, where he co-founded the QUT Real World Futures Program to help support local entrepreneurialism across Brisbane and beyond.

Since returning to his journalistic roots, David now continues to contribute to the state conversation in a range of publications, including InQueensland. For him, a keen interest in Queensland has always come naturally. “This is where I live. It’s where my children live. Queensland stories are important to us …”

It’s this noteworthy career that made David a welcomed addition to the 40 Under 40 Awards’ judging panel. Last month, David and a diverse team of fellow Queenslanders selected finalists from almost 200 applications.

“The judging process was both inspiring and demanding,” shares David. “I loved the enthusiasm across the board and the balance between achieving business success and contributing to the betterment of the community – whether helping those in need, creating jobs or creating entertainment.”

David brought to the judging panel a rich knowledge of Queensland business throughout the years and the major changes it’s faced. 

“When I first wrote about business, the scene was dominated by resources and real estate businesses,” he adds.

“This is still important but we are seeing more businesses based on technology and creativity. This adds depth to the economy and makes Queensland a more interesting place to be part of.”

David believes celebrating and nurturing local changemakers is crucial to the state’s prosperity. Events such as 40 Under 40 Awards offer Queensland the chance to recognise its trailblazing and entrepreneurial community and their achievements.

“Queensland is a state that relies on business success,” explains David. “We have seen over time how businesses, once they succeed quickly in Queensland, are swallowed up by global or national competitors.”

“It’s important there be a pipeline full of new talent, creating fresh ideas.”

Despite living in an era of unknowns, David remains positive about the future of Queensland business. “I am largely optimistic about the future of Queensland business. The diversification I mentioned before is a good sign.”

“There’s a lot to celebrate about Queensland and the rise of a new generation of leadership is an important part of that story. The more people who know it, the better.”
