Timothy Brown, Choreographer, Salōn

Make time to appreciate the good things in life ...

Local choreographer, performer and educator Timothy Brown is the young talent behind the Judith Wright Centre’s latest cabaret showing Salōn. Having trained with The Victorian College of Arts Secondary School and the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne, Timothy went on to dance with the Queensland Ballet, touring Europe, Singapore and Japan. Turning his attention to contemporary dance he joined Expressions Dance Company before performing as a freelance artist and teaching at a range of dance schools in Brisbane and rural Queensland. In an eclectic pairing of dance, live music, burlesque and circus arts, Timothy has now created Salōn – a bohemian performance, where each character’s individual tale unites in a spectacle of physical feat, pop-art vocals and exotic exhibitionism. Salōn will open at Judith Wright Centre this Saturday June 22 in a newly designed cabaret space, running until June 29. The Weekend Edition caught up with Timothy to chat weekend essentials.

How do you like to start your weekend?
Most things start with a coffee. The best gift I ever received was a coffee machine two years ago and I have used it every day since.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning?
Gone are the days of Video Hits! So now I like to walk down to the markets for a fresh breakfast.

How do you like to unwind?
My parents’ place (in Victoria). I like to sit in the living room and meditate on the view of the forestry hills.

What are your essentials for a well-spent weekend?
Closing the iMac, getting in the car and taking off somewhere with my partner and friends.

What’s something you’ve been meaning to do on the weekend but haven’t got around to yet?
Art framing. I have some beautiful paintings that are still rolled up. Including one painted by a lovely old elephant.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday evening?
Movies, dancing and laughing.

What are you looking forward to next weekend?
Opening night of Salōn!

Mostly emails unfortunately, however they are mostly from my extraordinary collaborators.

Nature.

What was your childhood dream?
To be a choreographer.

Making people happy.
