Cafe owner by trade and an avid collector in her spare time, Naomi Corbett found the perfect way to channel her two loves when she coined the idea for The Low Road Cafe, which opened in Windsor earlier this year. Filled with all the kitsch wares Naomi couldn’t accommodate in her home, the cafe has become an extension of her own living room, with her former couch sitting as a focal point of the interior. Naomi endeared herself to the Wilston community while at the helm of Qwerk, so when the time came for her to create her own locale with husband Ben, the pair decided to set up in the same neighbourhood. Her retro wares and ever-bubbly personality have proven to be a successful combination, and Naomi has plans in the works to begin selling her collection of homewares, records and other knick-knacks in the cafe. Before the rush of weekend trade began, The Weekend Edition sat down with Naomi to chat about weekends and her favourite things.
How do you like to start your weekend?
Ideally, I like to start my weekend with a Saturday – but since opening a cafe that hasn’t really happened. Right now, I am happy if I can start my weekend with five hours sleep and a Berocca.
What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning?
I write ‘hangover’ on an ice-cream bucket, cut some holes for eyes and shove it on the head of the staff member who looks the most haggard.
How do you like to unwind?
By putting an ice-cream bucket on a staff member’s head.
What are your essentials for a well-spent weekend?
My husband, friends, sunshine and some drinks make me feel like the happiest girl alive.
What’s something you’ve been meaning to do on the weekend but haven’t got around to yet?
Having a Saturday off! I’ve heard really great things about it …
What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday evening?
Watching a Brisbane storm roll into town from the ye olde Windsor Bowls Club is my favourite Sunday thing.
What are you looking forward to next weekend?
I’m going to a party!
What are you reading at the moment?
The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes. If you ask me the same question in ten years, I will still be trying to finish it, but I highly recommend it. Australian history is gruesome, exciting and gut-wrenchingly sad.
What inspires you?
Normal people doing excellent things.
What was your childhood dream?
To be kidnapped by the Goblin King from Labyrinth. Jennifer Connelly blew it.
What has been your greatest achievement?
I am able to draw a parallel from every significant moment in my life to something from Little Women. Little Women is like the modern-day Girls – feel sorry for me.
What is success to you?
Freedom.
What are your words of wisdom?
Quit your job – you’re too good for them. Unless of course you are working for me, in which case put that bucket back on your head and make that babycino.
