An illustrator, designer and avid collector, Hannah Cutts has been hoarding various found objects for years, but had always put off seeing the processes and pairings of each item as an art form. Inspired by Rosalie Gascoigne, who didn’t become an artist until the age of 57, Hannah’s first exhibition of upcycled collectables opens this Friday at Edwina Corlette Gallery. Linoleum, deer antlers, bicycle seats, fishing buoys, sea fans, tapestries and old maps have been sourced from all over the world and upcycled into original, one-off artworks for Look What I Found. Using exhibition as a medium to sort and create from the continuous stream of rare vintage and antique finds overflowing from her home, Hannah hopes to use each summer to hunt and gather, before building new artworks and showing annually in February. The Weekend Edition caught up with Hannah to chat weekend essentials.
How do you like to start your weekend?
Reading in bed.
What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday morning?
Surf, coffee and make a plan of action for the weekend as a whole.
How do you like to unwind?
A big walk on the beach, walking from Fingal to Kingscliff, a good audio book, coffee, then walk back again.
What are your essentials for a well-spent weekend?
Babysitting organised in advance.
What’s something you’ve been meaning to do on the weekend but haven’t got around to yet?
Get a massage.
What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday evening?
Go to bed early and read with dark chocolate and tea.
What are you looking forward to next weekend?
I have an art exhibition opening at Edwina Corlette Galley.
What are you reading at the moment?
Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut.
What inspires you?
Creating art from found objects and the finding of those bits and bobs.
What was your childhood dream?
To be a decathlete … strange, but true.
What has been your greatest achievement?
To make a living through art and design.
What is success to you?
Taking chances, pushing the boundaries, and being an artist, but still being able to pay the bills.
What are your words of wisdom?
Pick something that you would love to do, make a commitment that you can’t pull out of and then follow through.
